"Summon" Paranoia

When The Adjustment Bureau was released in theaters, I felt that the film looked interesting enough, but not enough that I wanted to plunk down the money to see it at the movies.  Having been given the opportunity to listen to the short story that inspired it, however, I might just have to give it a look.

The short story, while entitled The Adjustment Bureau for this particular movie tie-in, is actually called The Adjustment Team.  It's a brief look into the life of real estate agent Ed Fletcher.  Whenever he shows up late for work, he walks into a world that is literally crumbling in his hands.  Uncertain of what is happening and believing that he might be dead or crazy, he leaves work and returns with his wife.  Everything appears to be back to normal at first, but Ed notices slight differences in everything from his co-workers to the building itself.

Soon enough he finds himself at the mercy of the leader of the Adjustment Team, and the revelation he is given proves to be both terrifying and life-threatening.

The story is read by Phil Gigante.  His intonation and emotionally-charged reading style gives the listener an excellent vision of Ed's world and how it is falling apart.  The story explores paranoia and begs the question, "Do we really control our own destiny?"

I can't speak for the film adaptation, but The Adjustment Team is a very good short story that makes you stop and think.
