This Album by Brendan James is definitely missing something. His voice is distinctive... and actually reminds me a bit of Tracy Chapman's. But listening to these songs, I get a sense that they just lack any feeling... along with the singer's voice. He sounds very robotic and lacks a warmth that is crucial to this musical genre. I find myself "zoning" out and feeling like a "zombie" when I try to listen to this album because it doesn't instill any kind of emotion or feeling in me. I think a lot of …

Brendan James "the Day is Brave" shows off his poetic lyrical talent and likeable voice, yet is musically somewhat dreary. He sounds to me like a depressed James Blunt, and even the songs toward the later half of the disc that are more upbeat don't generate much melody or engagement. With the lyrical skills present on this album I see significant potential for James. I found Hero's Song to be a thoughtful ode to America's misled soldiers, and if James can add more melody and a fuller production …

Generally speaking, I approach commercially produced music the way I approach people: slowly, warily, suspiciously. In today's marketing environment, it has become the norm for record producers to offer one or two great songs on a CD, then fill the remainder of the tracks with mediocrity, holding back other great songs in anticipation of the next CD release.
