Woopty-Doo! So Vick Signs With the Eagles? Is He Going to Play? Who Knows...

While I've been working all day, I have had SportsCenter on in the background and I have to say, who cares if Michael Vick singed with the Eagles?  Really.  Up until two weeks ago, Vick was probably one of the most hated Human beings in America because of his involvement in dog fighting and animal abuse.  Now that it's football season, it's almost as if people are letting that go a little and that doesn't make sense.  All over the news today the question that is being asked is, "Besides being a better football player, is he capable of becoming a better man and does he deserve a second chance?"  While I believe everyone deserves a second chance, what he's done is unforgivable and is in my mind a permanent stain on his person.  To ask if he deserves a second chance now is actually rather irrelevant since it seems he has in fact been given one by the Philadelphia Eagles Organization.  Does that mean we have to like it? No.

As far as football and the NFL are concerned, no one can take away the fact that Vick is a great player, but the big question is... is he even going to play?  Think about it for a second, the Eagles have one of the best quarterback in the NFL in Donovan Mcnabb.  Sure, at any moment in time he could get hurt and then there is no doubt Vick would play, but I just don't see Mcnabb getting injured giving Vick little or no opportunity to play.  The only other option I see is Andy Reid giving Vick some playing time if the Eagles are up by a huge margin.  Realistically, let's look at it this way, Vick signed a 1 year contract with the option of a second year.  I don't see that second year happening; I see him going to another team where he can be the starter.

Either way, there is going to be a lot of controversy over the issue during the next couple of weeks.  Obviously, there are people who are going to be upset with the decision (and rightfully so) and then others who don't care either way.  I'm sure there are a lot of Eagles fans who are happy to see the team have another good QB.  Do I like Michael Vick?  Not in the least, but no matter what is said about him and what he has done, he makes the game of football a lot more interesting and the next couple of seasons are going to be exactly that.  So in a nutshell, terrible person, great ball player, fun NFL season, lots of controversy.

Husher, Nice review. I really respect your point of view but I ask that you remember that the NFL (and Professional Sports in general) is like a big Monopoly game. teams often have other interest in obtaining a player other than the obvious reason of having them take the field to play. Vick has the opportuinty to play during the preseason which can be used as a showcase for his skills as of today. After which the Eagles can trade him to any destination that would like to grab a player of his caliber. I guarentee there are plenty of teams who could use his talents not naming any off top. DETROIT!! Also the Eagles may keep him because he is essentially a faster McNabb. The only problem they face with Vick coming off the bench is that once he steps on the field we all know the run is coming.

Really good points made by both of you guys. I actually had been skimming espn and sports sites for several days waiting to see who the team was going to be. My problem with Vick is that I just don't trust that dude. Not wife and husband trust or best friend trust...you know that pro-athlete child hero trust. I wish him the best and if he works on saving dogs the rest of his career maybe it will make an impact on the dog fighting community (not holding my breathe since I know what that community is like) but just maybe. As far as playing time, Eagles, McNabb and is he a real quarterback time will tell. It's nice to see that a guy is going to pay his debt to society by doing some time and financially. AJ I did not even think about the Eagles using as a carrot for the other NFL teams, nice point. Husher I am with you man, part of me is like whatever, but also it's nice to see him come back and maybe do something honorable in life.
