I was not much familiar with John Simms acting work until his taking on of the role of The Master in the final trilogy of episodes for Dr. Who series three. He was astonishing in the role as the Master, playing the unstoppable psychopath on his quest to take over the universe, and when he died in the series finale, I found myself being disappointed we wouldn't see this man play such a superb role again. As is the tradition with Dr. Who, the end is never truly the end and as you would suspect, The Master is back and more psychotic than he was the last time.

Following on from the events which led the doctor to defy the rules of time, he is haunted by the messages from the Ood that the end was near. He is linked together with the Ood as they show him the nightmares they have been having which features a reincarnated Master which is an image that will haunt the Doctor throughout the episode. He also comes to the realisation that time is moving faster than normal and they warn him that the end of time is upon them. The Master returns to be found in the middle of a dump as a homeless person with an almost unlimited appetite for power and revenge.

I wont say anymore as it certainly needs to be witnessed first hand. Just know that Tennant exhibited some of his finest acting than in his entire tenure as the Doctor. John Simm is also superb as the madness is turned up many notches to steal the show. Bernard Cribbins seems to be in receipt of a bigger role in the Dr. Who universe during this episode and it's exciting to see the possibility of where they will take the character. In the first part Donna doesn't have much of a role, but from what we saw of her she will certainly take on a bigger role in the longer, second half.

For the first of what are David Tennants last two episodes as the Dr. it was sublime in possibly every way, and the surprise at the end certainly makes me feel better about where they will be taking not only the second part but the next series come 2010.
