Review: The Greasy Wiener & The Nacho Food Trucks

Half the fun of owning a membership to LACMA (that’s the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) is going there on a weekday afternoon and being greeted by a dozen or so of L.A.’s finest food trucks. I’ve blogged and video blogged about some of my samplings from this group before, but this post is unique in that I not only decided to try out a new food truck, but introduce my mother to the wonderful world of food trucks as well! Now if I can only get her to stop calling them “garbage trucks” (she means well).

It was a lovely late May day when Steffie, mum and myself headed to LACMA to partake on a sojourn to LACMA where we had 1:00pm reservation to view the Tim Burton exhibit. Before that – lunch! After much deliberation, mom and Steffie went with the Nacho Truck.

They were both very pleased with their orders, though mom was definitely sweating out the spicy soyrizo. Steffie liked the lightness of the chicken, but found the portion satisfactorily filling. We all enjoyed their use of flour tortilla chips, though I think I was the only one who was very enthusiastic about the additional flour tortilla (in non-chip form) at the bottom of the plate. Perfect for scooping up any leftovers and rolling them into an impromptu burrito!

My quibbles are that there is no non-soy based no-meat option for people like me who just like bean, cheese, pico de gallo & guacamole nachos and that guacamole is $1.50 extra. I feel that guacamole should be a staple rather than a luxury item when it comes to nachos. Charging extra for it is certainly not news and it might be an avocado-farmer-prices-in-season situation that I am simply not educated on.

As for myself, for whatever reason, I got a hankering for a hot dog.

I ordered the traditional greasy wiener, which came with grilled onions, mustard and my choice of a premium topping. I had my dog doused in “Truck Made” cheese sauce. A dill pickle spear was included. $4.00
What is unique about the wieners from the Greasy Wiener is that they are double fried, which is noted as being New Jersey style.
The dog was golden going down but sat a little heavily in me. I have no one to blame but myself, and as I said, it was damn tasty. The flavor combo was perfect, though I think I could have used more cheese (who doesn’t want more cheese, I ask you?) The pickle was the ideal companion, giving my taste buds a much needed crunch of sour after all of that savory.

Additional menu items include Angus sliders (called Iggy’s), specialty curly fries, a veggie dog, a chicken apple dog and wieners that feature standard hot dog flair such as bacon and/or sauerkraut.

Next time I have a free Friday to attend the Friday Food Fair and Artisanal Marketplace in Pasadena and GWT will be there, I’ll be getting me some of them Iggy’s and curly fries!
