A beautiful novel that departs widely from the movies. It is an amazing novel that captures struggles in finding who you are and understanding basic human nature. I couldn't put the book down and think that it is such an amazing classic I highly recommend it to everyone. You can't help but feel for the poor hunchback, feeling his pain at being such an outsider, and while I desperately wanted to enjoy Esmerelda and appreciate her even in her naive innocence, I couldn't enjoy her character. But the fact that I didn't like her didn't take away from the fact that she was such a central character that really tied the story together. The haggard woman in the prison I wish was more developed but again, her mystery played an important part. Overall, this book is classic, timeless, and breathtaking in its descriptions.
