Take "The Survivor" TV series add a little Thunderdome or Rollerball and a touch of The Truman Show and you have the ho-hum Hunger Games. Maybe if I had read the book, it would have made more sense but otherwise it gives you a lackluster beginning and where's the ending finale.
All the viewer is told at the movie's start is that there was a great uprising years ago where a few of the colonies/districts rebelled and lost and are now they are under the rule of the uber elite who live decadent lives in a dazzling city while the oppressed live in fenced off camps. Instead of having an Olympics to highlight the athletes who through their power and skills can reach their goal, it is a death match to all but the winner from each of these districts. What a great motivator!
Now if only they were given sufficient training to make the fight suspenseful. But alas that either wasn't in the book or in the scriptwriters thoughts, so there is an initial bloodbath followed by a bunch of running around through the woods after that.
The only worthwhile acting was by the lead actress - at least I cared something about her character. There was little to no development of anyone else. The city dwellers seemed merely idiotic and the district rabble just robotic. To me this movie would be worth a Razzie. I'm glad I only paid $1 to rent it.
