The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of those series whether you hate it or absolutely love it.

The series follows a high school girl named Haruhi Suzumiya with a very unique attitude. Without knowing it, she has the power to change reality. A classmates of hers, Kyon practically narrates the crazy antics that Haruhi forces upon him. When entering high school, Kyon left his wild imagination of his love for supernatural things but reunites with those past thoughts when he becomes Haruhi's "right-hand man." Ever since he associated himself with the mysterious brash girl, a change of events led him to a world that he never thought possible. Soon he is introduced to a time traveler, an esper, and an alien who all tells him about the secret behind Haruhi Suzumiya. These three beings, along with Kyon all join the same club Haruhi meets; and coincidently the three were sent to Earth to observe her every move. If Haruhi becomes unhappy with reality, she ends up creating a whole new universe. This leads the girl wanting to leave the current universe to the new one, thus destroying the current universe she's in. Her "guardians" try keeping the current universe entertaining enough so that Haruhi won't subconciously create another world.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is so popular that the fanbase has created a whole new "religion" for it called Haruhiism. There is such a huge cultural impact to this series that people go way beyond a "fan" to think that Haruhi is a real god. Suzumiya has been known to be cult television series and the fans are known as the "haruhiism trekkies."

Haruhi Suzumiya is also a light novel and a manga. There's an internet fanbase for the ending song Hare Hare Yukai which is a dance that the characters do which is very popular. I will admit that I loved this series. It kept me entertained throughout the entire show. The last episode was a disappointment though. It had the feeling of no ending; a pet peeve of mine. There has been rumors for a second season; which I can't wait to see.

Great breakdown, Aphrodite! Glad to see that you are really into this stuff! Have you seen the "Death Note" anime series? If you haven't, I highly recommend that one.
