Steely Dan's earliest professional work included pop and rock work that moved more onto jazz and fusion oriented pieces.  The Royal Scam was the last major hurrah for they're rock days with some really solid playing.      All the songs on The Royal Scam have got a running theme of crime, loss, dishonesty or other bad news.  Kid Charlemagne's tale of a drug chemist, The Caves of Altamira and it's loss of innocence, Don't Take Me Alive and it's …

Dan takes a dark turn down crime street with it's songs and a recurring theme of bad deeds or other dishonesty. Great arrangements and playing.

Steel Dan has never put out a bad recording and this certainly is no exception. While not on the same level as Pretzel Logic, it certainly comes darn close. Kid Charlemagne with its gorgeous guitar riffs is my second all time favorite tune of theirs (Rikki Don't Lose That Number is #1). The drumming totally rules on that track as well.However, this recording does not stop at track number one. Each of the songs has some intoxicating rhythms. Green Earings just chuggs along with mesmerizing syncopation. …
