The Roys "Lonesome Whistle"

The Roys, an on-the-rise brother-sister duo, have a brand new record out in stores today (March 22). "Lonesome Whistle" is a refreshing take on modern bluegrass music. Lee and Elaine Roy are clearly not ashamed of their country roots. This project showcases their individual talents and really defines them as artists.

The album's first single, "Coal Minin' Man," pays homage to all of our blue collar men out there working hard just to make a dollar. It's a catchy little tune and a good choice as the album's leadoff track. It really sets the tone for the rest of the record and gives the listener a good idea of what The Roys are all about.

Lee and Elaine receive a little help from their pals Ricky Skaggs and The Whites on "That's What Makes It Love." Elaine's tone is remarkably similar to that of Lee Ann Womack. If you ask me, that is about the highest compliment one could receive, as I believe that Womack is easily one of the top female vocalists and storytellers of our time. This is a beautiful song about the power of love and how it conquers even in the hardest of times -- a single mom working two jobs, a man running deeper and deeper into debt, Jesus dying on the cross for us -- it all works out because love is more powerful than all of the negative things in our lives.

The banjo riff in "Nothin' I Can Do About It Now" is one of the best I've heard in a long time. I've said it before and I'll say it again, country is in need of more banjo! If this ain't country, I don't know what is. I absolutely love this song. I'm sure it has to be a fan favorite in their live shows. This song alone would get me to go to one of their concerts.

Elaine describes "Give a Ride to the Devil" as a song about giving into temptation and "giving the devil the keys to your life." The man in the song takes all the wrong roads as a youngster (stealing, drinking, etc.) even though he knows he's doing wrong, but it ends up teaching him a lesson in the long run. You keep giving your keys to the devil and pretty soon he's going to drive you a little too far south.

"I Wonder What God's Thinking" is a song that makes you wonder what God really thinks of all of us. When you watch the news and all you hear about is murders and homelessness, you have to wonder if God is disappointed in us for hurting one other instead of helping one another. The song asks an interesting question ("when the rain falls from heaven, is it the tears from His eyes?") and actually makes me want to be a better human being. It's a thought-provoking, beautiful message.

All in all, "Lonesome Whistle" is a record that The Roys should be extremely proud of. I haven't heard a bluegrass album this interesting in a long time. To learn more about Lee and Elaine, check them out online.
