"Textbooks tell students that the federal government must intervene in the affairs of hundreds of millions of individuals because these individuals are not capable of making their own decisions. They are not capable of negotiating a wage with an employer. They are not capable of saving for their retirement. They are not capable of deciding what kind of health care is best for them, given the limitations of their income. They are not capable of deciding what kind of educational program is best for their children. The textbook version of the welfare state tells the story of the failure of the free market to make available opportunities to large numbers of people, opportunities that involve an increase in personal responsibility, but that also bring with them an increase in personal liberty." -- page 21
There is a quiet revolution taking place all across the fruited plain. Increasing numbers of parents are fed up with the "one size fits all" approach to education being promulgated by the federal government and the teacher unions. Furthermore, the cost of educating our young people in traditional school systems and universities is escalating at an unsustainable rate. What many parents do not know is that there are now a wide variety of innovative and cost-efficient alternatives available to them. Former Congressman Ron Paul is a long-time proponent of homeschooling and alternative approaches to education. He is currently devoting much of his time and energy to creating an innovative new online curriculum for students from K thru 12. He has also written an exciting new book called "The School Revolution: A New Answer for Our Broken Education System". In his comprehensive treatise on the subject of education in America Ron Paul states the obvious--the way we continue to educate our young people in the second decade of the 21st century is clearly obsolete. With the advent of the internet and the availability of other exciting new technologies it is now possible for most students over the age of 14 to literally educate themselves at home. Paul believes that the like the U.S. Postal Service the current educational system in this country is a "dinosaur" and whether the unions like it or not it is going to be largely replaced over the next generation. In "The School Revolution" Ron Paul aims to make parents aware of all of the options that are already available to them. It is a very exciting time!
If you are a parent of a student in the public school system you are already aware of all the problems. There is no need for me to enumerate them here. What Ron Paul is proposing is replacing traditional classroom instruction with new educational materials that are not tied to traditional textbooks. Low cost publishing on the internet makes it possible to create alternative curriculums without spending millions on new texts. Parents would be able to choose from a wide variety of options that reflect the values they wish to transmit to their children. The kind of education Ron Paul is talking about would be geared to help our young people accept ever greater responsibility as they mature. Paul believes that students should have daily reading and writing assignments and should be taught public speaking skills as well. And unlike the traditional classroom, online instruction allows students to proceed at his/her own pace. The advantages of online instruction are simply too numerous to mention here. In the curriculum that Ron Paul is currently developing two years of Western Civilization would be required at the high school level. His goal is to educate a whole new generation of conservative and libertarian leaders. At the end of the day Ron Paul is committed to making students both good citizens and productive members of society.
There is much food for thought in "The School Revolution: A New Answer for Our Broken Education System". I have read a number of books about this subject and this one is among the best. If you are a parent who is fed up with the federal government and your local school system then I urge you to take a look at this book. You just might be surprised at all of the options that are already out there. The same holds true for those exploring all of the choices now available for college. I found "The School Revolution" to be a comprehensive and very well-written book. The former congressman presents his case with passion and intelligence. It's high time that average folks revolt against the bloated and intransigent educational establishment. Very highly recommended!
