The Shot to Die For is cleverly titled and well written. It begins with the abduction of an Iraqi photographer by terrorists, for no apparent reason. Only later, as friends in the US forces begin searching for him, does it come to light that the photographer has taken a picture of someone whom no one was supposed to see.
From this intriguing opening, author M.H. Sargent leads readers on a fast-paced ride that touches on many of today's current news topics, including the bank crisis, the war in Iraq and the long-standing hostilities between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The characters are well drawn and, while I am not familiar with what daily life is like in Iraq, the details of the plot are convincing and appear to be grounded in reality.
The ending of this novel seemed a bit predictable to me, but overall The Shot to Die For is an entertaining and worthwhile read.
