"The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" is the first book in the “Wolves” saga by Joan Aiken. “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase” tells the story of two precocious young girls in a battle of good versus evil.

Bonnie Green grew up in the privileged upbringing of Willoughby Chase Manor. When her mother fell ill, Bonnie’s parents - Mr. and Mrs. Green - set out on a cruise around the world, leaving the mysterious Miss Slighcarp in charge of the estate. Around the same time, Bonnie’s orphaned cousin, Sylvia Green, came to stay at Willoughby Chase when her ailing nurse could no longer care for her. Bonnie and Sylvia watched in horror as the nasty Mrs. Slighcarp transformed the once warm and welcoming Willoughby Chase into a dark, scary place and sent the girls to live in a terrible orphanage, telling the girls that their parents have died.  With the help of Simon, a young goose seller, the girls break out of the orphanage and begin their battle to reclaim their home.

"The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" is a classic story of bravery and battle. The story is sure to excite the imaginations of young readers as they explore the surroundings of the enchanting Willoughby Chase, the frightening orphanage, and the cave of goose boy Simon. While the formal language of the text could be a tough start for some readers, once they have acclimated they will be rewarded with a story in which the language, characters, and moral. The text is nicely offset with stark ink sketched drawings will sweep the reader back in time and along the journey in which good triumphs over evil, and having a pure heart leads to victory.
