The Arcadian Faces Off With Another Ancient Terror

  • Jul 31, 2013

This is the third installment I have read in the Alex Hunter (Arcadian) series and it is by far the weakest of the three!  Hunter is a special forces soldier (HAWC) who took a bullet to the head and has undergone structural re-engineering that makes him stronger and faster than normal humans as well as having enhanced senses.  Like the X-Men's Wolverine his body will quickly heal itself from most injuries.  In each of the three books I have read the formula is the same.  Have some ancient undiscovered and unstoppable creature wipe out a lot of people including special forces military and have it eventually face off against Alex.

In this one his girlfriend from the Antarctic tale (Aimee Weir) is working in South America with a group trying to get a new supply of natural gas out of the ground.  Soldiers and workers start getting killed and others simply disappear.  This seems to be tied to a priest that resembles a priest that the author describes at the beginning of the book from the 1500's who got attacked by a strange creature.  Additionally, there seems to be a rapidly spreading virus that melts human flesh.

Aimee's situation is being monitored by Alex's boss, Hammerson.  When contact is lost with Aimee's group, Hammerson has Alex go South America with a small number of HAWCs to find out what has happened.  The book moves at a much slower pace the the other two entries I read and already knowing the story formula, the reader just basically looks for the showdown between Alex and the creature.  This is little suspense as to trying to find out about the priest and until Alex gets there it is hard to not just skip ahead.   The last quarter of the book does pick up the pace.  Had it not I would have only given this book two stars but as it is I grudgingly give it three.
