Trader Joe's Automatic Dishwashing Detergent: An Environmentally Sound Alternative

We finally got ourselves an automatic dishwasher last fall.  It was a convenience I had done without because I was concerned about using too much water and didn't like the fact that detergents used in these machines were pretty harsh.  I did some research, though, and learned that properly used dishwashers actually use less water than hand washing.  I also learned about Trader Joes's Automatic Dishwashing Detergent.

Most dishwashing powders contain bleach, fragrance, dyes and phosphates.  I was amazed that phosphates hadn't been completely outlawed; apparently, this additive can't be used in laundry detergents anymore (in most states, anyway) but it's still regularly used in dishwasher detergents!  It is a major pollutant, and I am definitely against using it (I believe it is being phased out as I write this, however).

Imagine my relief when I read a review of this product and found that not only did it NOT contain any of the above nasty ingredients, but also contained enzymes to help clean the dishes better.  Our next shopping trip, I picked up a box to try.  At  $3.49 for 50 ounces, it seemed like a bargain, to boot!

Well, let me tell you, it is a great product.  I use less than the suggested amount, and my dishes are really spanking, plus it doesn't etch the glass like some brands do.  Do you hate that smell that wafts out when you open the dishwasher door?  It's chlorine, a nasty, toxic chemical smell.  No problems here, though--only a clean smell emanates from my machine!

When a company makes a product that not only does the job it's advertised to do, but also treats the environment kindly, I am only too happy to sing its praises.  Good old Trader Joe's comes through again!

I haven't been using my dishwasher because after trying once, it left all the dishes dirty and I had to wash them by hand. I don't know if it is the machine or whatever we put in it, but I need to try this. Thanks for the review!

You're welcome--and good luck! BTW, phosphates have been phased out of dishwasher detergents as of this past July, so that pollutant is no longer a concern. However, many national brands still contain dyes, fragrances and chlorine bleach, so TJ's powder remains an environmentally sound consumer choice.

Another TJ's lover on Lunch :) Nice review, sounds like a great product!! My current dish washing detergent is super expensive and really hasn't done too well, so I'm excited to give this a shot. I'm not sure if you've seen the Trader Joe's community on lunch, but it's a great place for discovering reviews on even more of their products!
