Just Some Routine Days Inside a Hospital?

  • Jan 30, 2014
This review is based on an advanced copy received from the author but reflects my own honest opinion.

The Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Brier Hospital is the focal point of this book. The NICU is responsible for the care of premature birth babies, many of which will not survive and of those that do survive, many will have disabiities. It is there that Dr. Michael Cooper meets Lisa Cooke. Lisa came from a troubled home life with a father that physically abused both Lisa and her mother. Lisa was able to turn her life around and land a job at Brier. Michael and Lisa fall in love and marry.

Like the difficulties that the premies face, Michael and Lisa seem to face many difficult challenges themselves. I will leave it to the reader to find out for themselves since I do not want to post spoilers. This book grabbed my attention from the start and held me throughout. The reader immediately bonds with Lisa's character and soon thereafter with Michael's. Dr. Gold does a good job of educating the reader as to what goes on daily in the NICU and the stress the medical staff is put through, including the legal aspects involved. Having a cousin with two premature babies, I now am much better informed about some of the causes she campaigns for.

I wish some of the characters had been developed a little more. Phoebe is a fun character but we only get glimpses of her throughout the book, usually when she is "wisecracking. The book was a little bit slow the first half but then really picks up steam after that and it is virtually impossible to put down until you finish it.

It is my understanding that Dr. Gold has a whole series of book centered around Brier hospital with many other interesting people. I look forward to reading these too.
