What does garbage and your picture have in common?

  • Oct 2, 2009
For Umbra, your garbage and photos are what they're after. Umbra, a Canadian design company, designs wonderful receptacles for these garbage & photos, ie. garbage cans and picture frames!

In some ways, Umbra specializes in containers of all kinds. For example, bar stool to hold you and garbage cans to hold your unwanted stuff! Umbra is interesting from a company perspective. Especially if you're interested in designs. I didn't find out about it in Canada but somewhere along the line, someone sent me a link to its website and I was fascinated from then on. It was many years ago when they first launch the site. The site had rooms and upon the choices you made, it tried to predict your personality and taste. That was many years ago and I found that highly interesting and thought it a most creative and innovative company. I like their concept!

Umbra sells concept rather than products, design rather than utilities. In some ways, Umbra has a Scandinavian feel to it although it is really Canadian. Umbra also has a concept store in downtown Toronto which I have yet visited but I will soon.

Umbra uses colors and simple lines to define their products. I do have some of their coffee tables which I find highly useful and easy to carry, even to another country and on board the plane! Generally though, articles sold by umbra are small and portable. Hence, they make good gifts even though many of their products are not cheap by all accounts. But, you can be sure you get a unique gift and one that'd be treasured by the recipient.

Hint hint: My birthday is just around the corner & I could do with a bar stool or two ;-)

Wow, that storefront looks awesome, and I love how minimalistic these designs are.  Reminds me a bit of Ikea.  But with you moving around all the time, do you really need more furniture? ;P
