This is one of the earliest known portraits of Countess Erzebet Bathory, also known as Elizabeth Bathory or The Blood Countess. Elizabeth is an important figure, both in Eastern European history, but also in terms of the evolution of the vampire legend. The reason being that Elizabeth was an actual blood drinker, who killed hundreds of virginal young women so that she could drink and bathe in their blood, which she thought restored her youth.
