This is perhaps the most famous portrait of Prince Vlad Dracula, the real life tyrant who served as an inspiration to Bram Stoker when naming his aristocratic vampire villain. Before 1987, Vlad was a little known figure in European history. After 1897 and the publication of Stoker's novel Dracula just about everybody knows of Prince Vlad, the Impaler and of Count Dracula, the vampire. Unfortunately, most people are more interested in the fictional character than the real one.
