Vehicle Mileage Tax (VMT)

A tax program that would tally the number of miles traveled by particular vehicles and collect payments from their owners.

“Is a Vehicle Mileage Tax Coming to a State Near You?”      There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the sudden, meteoric rise of EVs and ultra-fuel-efficient hybrids — with gas prices showing no sign of decreasing, … see full wiki

A Quick Tip by drifter51

Have you heard about this one? A number of state legislatures are taking a look at the so-called Vehicle Mileage Tax to raise badly need revenue. The program would tally the number of miles traveled by particular vehicles and collect payments from their owners. Most likely a chip will need to be implanted in every car to measure miles traveled. I have to think long and hard about this one folks but my initial reaction is that I don't like it. What is your opinion?

A classic case of no good deed goes unpunished - gas guzzlers and SUVs traded in for smaller vehicles and gas prices that have curbed driving by necessity - the appropriate response is that gasoline revenue goes down - so lets create a new tax scheme that punishes drivers for use, utilizing a chip that tracks vehicle mileage and can be remotely activated by the DMV. While I am not a Libertarian per say, this approach just offends me on personal liberty grounds.

As an aside, Progressive Insurance has a program that promises lower premiums if they can install a tracking chip in vehicles that will calculate avg. MPG, braking and other vehicle functions. So in exchange for a few less quid, you go in for a repair quote and Progressive voids the policy because their algorithms determine that you're a speed freak. No thank you.

Also, where was legislative responsibility when coffers were flush and gas tax revenue was being routinely diverted to other uses with agencies letting transportation infrastructure go to seed. (Who notices one more pothole, right?) Now that most states have privatized DMV and toll collection authority and the one-shot revenue gimmicks have dried up - what's next? My feeling is that a surtax on private registrations for vehicles that weigh in excess of a 2,000 pounds place the revenue burden fairly on those whose vehicles cause the most wear and tear on public roads. I know - minivan moms and sportsmen will howl. Tough. You use it - you pay for it.

I'd need to know more about it. A discussion of possible tax increases in various areas would be helpful. A fed flat tax might work but we won't see it in anyone's life time because of corporate lobbying for loopholes -- meanwhile we've been burying ourselves over the last nine years in the costs of two unfunded wars and one huge, relatively new and unfunded entitlement program, meds for seniors (which, of course, I think shouldn't be touched.) : - )

Pretty lame. It's an unnecessary tax and a burden to those who must drive every day. Hopefully this will get voted down by some cool heads in these same legislatures.
