Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are two true country legends that even a rock n roll guy like me can appreciate. This VH1 release features a very warm and intimate portrayal of a performance featuring Cash and Nelson.
The concert features merely both of this legends singing and playing acoustic guitars with no other instrumental support. As for myself, I would have liked to hear this music with a full band as I think a band would bring out more of the energy in at least some of the songs. As good as several of these songs are, I feel there are too many slow tunes on this batch. I guess that's the rock n roll in me talking.
Also, another sticking point is the fact that the versions of Crazy and On The Road Again are mere one minute snipets. Great melodies like that should be extended not shortened. Nonetheless I can surely appreciate such classics as Ghost Riders In The Sky, Folsom Prison Blues, On The Road Again, Always On My Mind, and Don't Take Your Guns To Town.
Big time fans of either of these artists should pick up this release and enjoy the intimacy of the performance. I will likely search for more edgy driving country recordings which may include some work from these legends. Does anyone have any suggestions?
