Walls & Bridges

An album by John Lennon

The careful burnishing of John Lennon's daunting legend usually obscures one telling fact: the former Beatle endured a long and troubling artistic slump in the mid-'70s. Indeed, his five-year retirement/househusband phase may have been one of the shrewdest … see full wiki

It'll Get You Through The Night

Walls And Bridges may not be on the same level as Imagine or the best material from Double Fantasy, but it certainly shows that John Lennon was indeed a formidable artist. Whatever Gets You Through The Night and Dream #9 are the most recognizable tunes in the lot. However Nobody Knows You When Your Down And Out, What You Got, Suprise Surprise(Sweet Bird Of Paradise) and Bless You are strong album tracks. John relies a little too much on horns and strings in the background. It certainly would be nice if some of the songs relied on a bouncy piano solo(as in Crippled Inside from the Imagine CD) or some good guitar(Give Me Some Truth). The instrumental support on Walls And Bridges adds some pleasant riffs here and there but doesn't really breakout into anything too memorable. Also some of the lyrics are not as descriptive as on songs on other records. The words from Imagine and Cold Turkey just seem to grab my attention a little bit more than some of these songs. But in general they are all pretty good.

If you feel that John Lennon can do no wrong, pick this CD up. Truthfully I would go with his earlier releases(Imagine especially) and possibly Double Fantasy that is if you can tolerate Yoko's songs.
