General Smedley Butler & The Truth Behind The Lies

  • Jun 17, 2010

At the beginning of the 20th century the United States was becoming a global power. American troops fought the Spanish American war and were operating throughout Central America and the Caribbean. One of the heroes of these incursions was Marine general Smedley Butler who received two Congressional Medals of Honor. In the early 1930’s he fought Washington on behalf of the veterans of WW1 to help them get a promised bonus they desperately needed.
In 1935 he wrote this slim volume of less than one hundred pages where he laid bare the truth behind the patriotic rhetoric that so many of our wars get cloaked in.  And here I will include a sentence from the book that sums it all up:
“I spent 33 years in the Marines, most of my time being a high-class muscle man for big business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for Capitalism.”
This then is the heart of Mr. Butler’s story and in it he lays out the facts behind his words. The edition of this book that I have also includes a photo montage from 1932 entitled “The Horror of It / Camera Records of War’s Gruesome Glories”.  It also includes a forward by Adam Parfrey that details how General Butler prevented a coup against the Roosevelt administration in the early 30’s.
All and all a lot of history is included in this rather short book. One that should be read by anyone who is thinking of entering military service. Peace.
Also included is a video montage with the words of General Butler along w/ other proud soldiers as they reflect on the true nature of war.  It is from out "Peace Through Courage" YouTube channel that we have also included a link to.http://www.youtube.com/user/Mindsi2
