Perfect For a Relaxed Paddling Style

Paddles can get really expensive, as you probably already know. Since I have started developing an interest for paddling in open water, I needed to start looking into getting a second paddle. I wanted to have a spare to take with me in case something happens. I decided on the Werner Camano to take the primary spot, with my old paddle becoming the backup.

I think it's important to hold a paddle before making a purchase decision. Especially if you can hold several at different price points. I was ready to buy the Werner Camano Carbon, which is a step above this one in the product line. This one has a carbon shaft with fiberglass paddles, while the Camano Carbon has a carbon shaft AND carbon paddles.

In the end, this amounts to the Camano Carbon being exactly 2 ounces (56.7g) lighter than this model, at a nearly $100 price premium. So in order to make a smart purchase, you need to ask yourself if a) you would notice 2 ounces on a paddle that's 7.5 feet long, and b) the 2 ounce difference is worth the price difference.

In my case, the answer is no, and no. So I opted for this model in red (it is available in amber, orange, and red).

I'm very happy with it overall. It's light and strong with very little flutter in the water. It's definitely designed for a relaxed paddling style, though. If you like to move a LOT of water with each stroke, I'd recommend taking a look at the Werner Corryvrecken instead. The Camano isn't designed for maximum speed - it's designed for maximum distance, comfortably.

The feathering is adjustable in 15° increments from -60° to +60°. Once connected, the two halves are locked solidly into place with no play. A button (flush with the shaft to stop accidental presses) releases the two halves. Separating them about an inch allows the feathering to be adjusted. Pressing them back together immediately locks them together again. It's a well-designed system that I prefer to the mechanism on my previous paddle.

If money was no object, then surely I'd have one of the high end 22-oz paddles. I mean, why wouldn't I? But cost IS a factor, and so I made a decision that I felt was the best compromise between weight and price.

I think I made the right choice. If you have an outfitter nearby, hold one of these and see how it feels. You'll love it!

You didn't mention in the review, but do you use these for kayaking? I thought that you would enjoy the Favorite Water Sports ExhilaRATE game. That is a great review, I don't think I would be able to think of that much to say about a paddle!
