What Fathers Day Really Means, Gifts or Not?

If you want to honor your father living or dead history will tell you that you can wear a red rose or a white rose, which one do you wear on this special day? If you do not know, I am going to tell you a little history behind this special day. History shows that the red rose honors all of the Fathers that are still with us, and the white rose honors all of the deceased Fathers. If you do not know or if your Father is just too old to purchase a gift for them this would be a good way to honor them.

A lot of people think that this holiday originally started in 1909 in Spokane Washington by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd (who first suggested this day), who wanted to honor her father because he had lost his wife and his children's mother while giving birth to the last of six children. At this time they already had a day that recognizes Mothers. He had to raise all of the children by himself, once Sonora had seen what a selfless act this was and what he had to do and sacrifice for them to raise all of these children she decided to honor him by wearing his favorite colored flower (a red rose).

But, there are other reports, even though our former President Nixon who was finally able to make it official and signed it into law in 1972 in the United States, that this tradition or celebration goes back approximately 4000 years to the times of the Babylonians, in which it just started out, with just a simple note or letter telling your father how much that you appreciate them or miss them and wishing them to have a long and happy life.

Sometimes you cannot just go to the store and pick out a gift and be done with it, you have to be a little creative and think about the age of your father or the fact that he is slowly withering away from old age and a simple gift will just not do. Sometimes your gestures and time spent with them throughout the year is worth more than any gift that you can possibly purchase. Usually the third Sunday of every June is reserved for the remembrance of all of our Fathers alive or deceased.

So, if you ever hear someone say this is just a holiday created by Hallmark to sell cards, they are sadly mistaken and that shows that they must not be a father themselves. Don't forget that there are more than just fathers in the world today, there are fathers, that are husbands, grandfathers, uncles, sons, and son-in-laws, and so called boyfriends, that play an important in the role of fatherhood.

A lot of people only celebrate this day not ever knowing what it is even all about, they think that it is just a way that they have to force themselves to get out of obligation and so that they do not have to hear anyone make them feel guilty about them not honoring their father at least a little bit. This is only one day out of the year so take advantage of it no matter how old that your father is. Remember, you only have one father and they will always be there for you, and there love is unconditional and never-ending.

Sometimes a gift will just not work, and that is the case with me, my wife lost her father and she misses him dearly and I dread the day that I am going to be in the same position. So, take full advantage of the time that they have left on this earth and honor them in some kind of fashion, no matter how small, be it by wearing a red or white rose or just taking them a cup of coffee or a simple day at the area lake or pond to do some bobber fishing.
