When The Shadows Began To Dance by Yamaya Cruz

  • Oct 30, 2011
The major theme of  When The Shadows Began To Dance
by Yamaya Cruz involves how a teenage lady can internalize
coping mechanisms to deal with a seemingly hopeless situation.

The story commences with arguments in a
household partially disheveled. Both parents
seem to be in a painful relationship evidenced
by mom's chain-smoking. Nelly is a teen being
cared for by a local mental health clinic.

The symptoms are more complex than simply
behavioral issues, although schizophrenia is
the differential diagnosis. Cognitive therapy
sessions are offered for treatment along with
antipsychotic medication.

The presentation does not say so; however,
schizophrenia patients may be helped by
nutritive counseling which is aimed at
detecting the following: 1)

o Blood sugar problems made worse by excess
   stimulant and excessive pharma use

o Essential fat imbalances

o Too many oxidants and not enough antioxidants
    like Vitamins A,C,E and Selenium

o Niacin (Vitamin B3) therapy

o Methylation problems helped by B12 and folic acid

o Pyroluria and the need for zinc

o Food allergies

Intuitively, Nelly has a dismissive view toward
the medications which could be helpful but
potentially valueless in her case. The proviso
is that Nelly needs to consult with a nutritionist
who may be able to balance the brain chemistry
with naturally based vitamins, herbs and high
quality food.

The largest ongoing puzzle is how junk food
establishments are readily available in many
poorer neighborhoods. Yet, there is a visible
scarcity of fruit and vegetable stores where
real food can be consumed. Interesting, this
dynamic could be at the heart of Nelly's craving
for a state of well being.

Throughout the presentation, readers get the
impression that Nelly has a good bit of common
sense in striving to uplift herself from a
seemingly hopeless predicament.

Later, Nelly would internalize the words of Orunmila.
"Now it's time for you to learn the secrets
of your past, and the key to survival. It's time
for everyone to look inside themselves and
master the forces of the Universe. "

In my own experience, this is good advice.
Herein are the secrets which Nelly can and
does put to good use.

The presentation is interspersed with the
violent acts of some gang members. One such scene
involves Chobo, Nico, Cabron, FB and Diablo
involved in harassing a young woman. The words are
"Negrita, usted es una chica mala" which means
loosely "Black woman you are one bad lady or chick ".

The presentation concludes with the words
"Nelly? Are you still with us?"
A distant voice cries out. "No, I was gone."

Overall, the presentation provides ample
examples of coping strategies under very
difficult circumstances.
