Still a great way to say "Thank You" or "I Love You"

Seems like every Valentine's Day or Mother's Day I hear a parade of ads that are intent on  discouraging all of us from giving flowers or candy as gifts. These ads argue that these tradtitonal gifts are now passe.  I wholeheartedly disagree.  Do you know of any woman who is not thrilled to receive a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates?  Meanwhile,  there are other times during the course of the year that you are looking for a simple gift to express your sincere appreciation to a friend, neighbor or relative who has extended some kindness to you.  For nearly a century now the Whitman's Sampler has filled the billed nicely for all of these occasions.  It might be a bit of a stretch but for all practical purposes the Whitman's Sampler has become an American institution.

Whitman's was founded way back in 1842 by a 19 year old Quaker named Stephen F. Whitman.  Young Stephen set up a small confectionery shop in PhiladelphiaWhitman was an innovative entrepreneur who quickly figured out  that presentation could be as important as taste to some customers. As a result he created beautiful packaging and well-crafted advertising campaigns that focused prospective customers on the quality of his candies. And when people tried Whitman's chocolates they absolutely loved them.   Over the next several decades the company maintained a steady growth.  By 1907  Whitman's Candies were appearing on the shelves in "better drug stores" across the region.  Four years later Walter Sharp stepped in as President of the company.  Mr. Sharp developed new products and initiated the company's money-back guarantee that continues to this day. Sharp also had ths distinction of creating the Whitman's Sampler, an assortment of the company's best-selling chocolates.  Inspired by a cross-stitched sampler hanging in his home, Sharp worked with a skilled employee to create the sampler that's reproduced on Sampler boxes to this day.  By 1915, the Whitman's Sampler had become America's best-selling box of chocolates.   This is still the case today!

So what are your favorite pieces in a Whitman's Sampler?  Personally, I am a sucker for anything caramel so I would have to rate the caramel as my personal favorite.  Meanwhile, I am also partial to the coconut and the Vermont Fudge pieces as well.  I suppose I enjoy just about all of the varieties save for the molasses chew which I could do without.  But the simple fact of the matter is that I have noticed that whenever someone receives a Whitman's Sampler as a gift there is always a great big smile on their face.  The Whitman's Sampler is a thoughtful and relatively inexpensive way to express your appreciation, admiration or affection for someone you care about.  I believe it works just a well today as it did nearly a century ago.  Recommended!
