From old wood to new wood – it does seem novel, if not ironic, to say the least. Coal is petrified wood that has lost its original content except for its carbon base through the centuries. And here we are trying to use the same material – in fresh form – supposedly to help the environment. Is it really worth it? Is it as environmentally clean or ethical as the alternative choice? Isn't it much wiser to preserve our forests and make use of the coal reserve?

It is much easier to harvest wood than it is to harvest coal, which requires complex machinery and underground tunnels. Coal also has many impurities such as sulfur and mercury and burning coal puts more radioactivity into the atmosphere than a comparable nuclear plant does. Wood is a renewable resource.

While the coal is there a-plenty and the mines are operating anyway, why not mine it? A balance can be reached that will not require closing the mines and cut down too much forest cover to provide the wood chip. This is a simple question of whether a nation, a company or a person decides to use steam, wood or coal to run its boilers based on the bottom-line and other major social and economic considerations. What one finally chooses is within the freedom given to each one of us under our present laws. Environmentalists cannot impose their principles at the loss of our inherent rights and freedom.

Fossil fuel has much higher carbon-dioxide content than wood based on pound-for-pound comparison. Hence, using equal amounts of either material will burden the environment more if we used coal. Wood chip actually helps reduce the global warming effect. As the report tells us, wood is not necessarily less efficient than coal. It is the heating system that determines the heat level attained. Wood chip, furthermore, is renewable while coal is not. Coal mining not only destroys the environment; it also endangers the lives of miners who work to extract it. In the end, wood chip is a better choice.
