Never been able to resist a book by the Caldecott Medal-winning author Eve Bunting. Her stories always have something to say to young readers - a lesson, a message, and each is presented in easy to understand language laced with humor.
WILL IT BE A BABY BROTHER? Is a case in point. There’s nothing much more exciting for a child than anticipating the birth of a new baby. Of course, most youngsters as in this case Edward, want either a sister or a brother. Edward most definitely wants a brother. In fact, months before the baby’s arrival Edward is calling him James.
Edward is so certain that he’s going to have a baby brother that he has begun putting some of his favorite things into the crib that he believes is waiting for James - Edward puts in his yellow dump truck, his wooden train, his wheelbarrow, and lots of other things that he thinks James will enjoy.
When Edward’s father suggests that the baby might be a girl, Edward makes a face and declares, “I’ll give her to Aunt Elizabeth.”
Well, there are surprises in store, especially for Edward. Beth Spiegel’s warm, affectionate watercolor and pen and ink illustrations tell readers what words cannot express.
