Similar to that of Kriss-Kross and Lil’ Mama, Fall 2010 brings us Willow Smith; a bright young hip-hop hopeful with an equally catchy buzz single… but with a bit more juice.
Willow is the 9-year-old daughter of Will Smith (one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood) and if that wasn’t enough to get your subwoofer tingling, her brother is the new karate kid and her mother, Jada, has been known to ‘set it off’ in a couple of ‘Matrix’ movies (even if they didn’t measure up to the 1st flick).
“Whip My Hair (back and forth)”, Willow’s new single is forthright in nature. It’s the type of track city kids like myself would hear blasting on ‘the block’ at any given moment. With a perfectly gritty, yet polished sense of production, Willow sings/raps with a confidence that only a 20-million dollar movie star father could garnish, especially at such a young age.
What’s more interesting is the unending buzz around Willow. Not even a decade in (to the world, not industry) and she’s already signed with Jay-z, whipped it real good all over Milan fashion week and caught more attention from paparazzo than most superstars! Safe to assume the Smith clan might be pretty well connected, and it’s no secret what Jada and Will are grooming their kids for in the long run. Lil’ Mama may have been at a disadvantage comparatively.
Isn’t it interesting how the only way to be in the entertainment industry is to already be in the entertainment industry? How many kids out there would love to be in Willow’s shoes (and shirts, and jeans for that matter) and may never have the chance? And all because she can unknowingly utter the infamous rich girl phrase - “do you know who my father is?”. Such is life. But does that make it okay? Hit the jump and decide for yourself.
