WitchSlayer Gretl ??

If one has an interest in different takes on classic fairy tales try this movie.

Hansel is the Witchslayer in this movie. So why the title; Witchslayer Gretl ??

Based on the classic Grimm's fairy tale this movie is years later. Hansel and Gretl are all grown up now - maybe 30 or so years later.

In the original fairy tale it is Gretl who kills the Witch while she and her brother (as children) are held captive in the Witch's house. So based on the original story the title of this movie would make sense!!

But the movie departs from some of the basics of the tale. Little Gretl is captured by the Witch while walking through the woods with her brother , Hansel (Hansel is left behind in the woods). He grows up finding he has the power to kill witches. The movie is Hansel's search for his lost sister Gretl, taken by the Witch so long ago. Hense the strange title for this movie (WitchSlayer Gretl) that makes Hansel the WitchSlayer. Confused ? ... Well so am I !!

The movie is indeed strange. It is also a small budget tv SyFy movie. Try to keep that in mind. In a culture where our minds have been habituated and so hypnotized by big budget CGI movies with tons and tons of super-duper mega action scenes - bloated and grandiose - this movie here is NOT. But nevertheless it is well worth seeing. It is a very good little movie that is not exactly perfect (what is?), yet somehow holds together the spirit of Hansel and Gretl in a new take on an old fairy tale.

Give this small budget little movie a chance; the photography is wonderful as is the different take on this classic tale - also the acting is very good for this kind of story/movie, with the music being memorable and good but a bit repetitive.

This is not a kids or adolescent movie - it does have a happy ending (of sorts - it's really rather puzzling based on Shannen Doherty's character, the grown-up Gretl) and there is no language or sex but the movie is somewhat dark and adult in its own way, and it is violent at times.
