As I was reading my newest volume of Card Captor Sakura manga, I wondered about how women are portrayed in anime. Now, let me say first that I am by no means a feminist or anything, but this was an idea that really made me think. Are there any truly beautiful women in anime and manga? Women that don't have breasts that defy logic (and gravity) with never-ending legs and ridiculously over-the-top hair with sexy get ups that barely cover them.
And while reading Card Captor Sakura, I realised that yes, there actually are. And in my opinion CLAMP have created a good amount of them. The anime woman that made me have these thoughts in the first place was Nadeshiko (Natasha for the English Dub inclined), Sakura's mother. She is a truly beautiful anime woman. She wears pretty, but relatively normal clothing, her hair gives you the appropriate amount of anime hair envy, and her boobs are NORMAL sized. She's gorgeous, and has a gorgeous personality too, which is great. Tomoyo is the same, for all that she's younger in CCS, but take a look at her and Sakura in CLAMP's recent Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and you can see that they've drawn them in a similar fashion, same with Chi in Chobits and many of their other women.
I see it a little bit in Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail. Their boobs still defy gravity a little, but most of them have personalities (and enough clothing) to compensate for it. Characters like Mirajane, Cana, Lisanna and Levy in particular are girls that are actually pretty cool, and not completely ridiculous in the breast department.
That being said, I certainly do not hate the 'average' anime woman. There are some very cool female characters out there that are simply insane in every way. A good example might be Celi from Kyo Kara Maoh! She is meant to be considered beautiful, and she is, but her exceedingly large breasts and the slit in her dress don't leave much to the imagination. But I still love her to bits!
Any thoughts on this? I'd love to hear what you all think in the comments!
