I loved The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick's first graphic novel. Would this new novel have the same depth of tenderness, the same intensity in plot line? I wondered--and now, having finished it, I find myself... wonderstruck. I adored this one, maybe even more than Hugo Cabret. Selznick is almost Dickensian in his ability to weave a tale, presenting the life of first one character, then another, giving us a bit here, a bit there, then finally weaving the two threads into one astounding tapestry. The fact that one character exposition is done through text, the other through drawings is simply brilliant. This is a tightly written, beautifully illustrated, amazingly poignant book which had me reading late into the night. I just could not stop turning the pages. Highly recommended for readers of all ages.
