Warning Spoiler-

On August 12, WrekCage premiered on Versus TV with a very good fight card.  The WEC has been around for eight years and recently underwent a merger with the UFC.  The WEC for the most part dissolved their 185lbs and 205lbs class.  The fighters from that class went to the UFC and WEC currently showcases Bantamweight (125lbs-135lbs), Featherweight (135lbs-145lbs), Lightweight (145lbs-155lbs).   In my opinion these are the best fighters in the game, I am not just saying that because I am a short guy.  These fighters have a ton of cardio, quick heavy hands and great wrestling and jiu-jitsu.  I tell people that if you want to learn about MMA, watch the bigger weight classes first.  The bigger classes move slower and you can learn to watch for submission attempts, while listening to the commentators describe what is happening on the ground.  In the lower weight classes, the action is so fast paced that regularly the commentators can not keep up with the action.  Many times while watching lighter fighters it looks like two snakes fighting and if you do not know your MMA you truly can not appreciate the techniques and skills demonstrated.

This past weekends event had several good matches with the main event fight being between Miguel Angel Torres (36 wins-1 loss-0 no contests-17 fight win streak)  v Brian Bowles (7-0-0).  Torres was the WEC Bantamweight Champ going into this fight.  Obviously Torres is much more experienced, but typically any record in MMA pro-level showing more than 5 fights is a sign of experience, just my opinion.

Torres is simply a freak when it comes to MMA fights, doing it for nearly 12 years and is only 28 years old. Torres is a tall Bantamweight with good striking and ground skills.  His reach allows him to stay in the pocket and strike with virtually any fighter.  Scary skinny guy.

Brian Bowles is a natural fighter, who started training and fighting about 3 years ago.  He has heavy hands, great chin, good wrestling and is very strong.  Fights well standing up and very aggressive on the ground.   Brian was considered very a big challenge for Torres going into this fight.

Spoiler
Round one (MMA rounds are 5 minute rounds w/three rounds for non-title fight and five rounds for title fight) both fighters spend the first minute circling each other with Torres pressuring Bowles.  Both fighters are using sound footwork to feel one another out.  As the first minute expires Torres throws the first real punch in the fight, a heavy jab.  Bowles ducks the jab, throws a overhead right and hits Torres square immediately wobbling Torres.  Torres retreats with Bowles right on top of him.  Torres looks shaken but not really hurt the two hit the cage and exchange some punches, with Torres recovering and throwing some solid hooks of his own  The both press the action and end up against the cage, Bowles has the underhooks and takes Torres down.  Bowles is in Torres' closed guard and both guys are really active on the ground.  The two separate and both fighters are standing up and throwing both kicks and punches.   Torres' jab finds it mark a few times helping him find his range, while Bowles is lundging and reaching to get at Torres.  Bowles comes in with a combination that extends him and Torres connects with a left and right hook combination that shakes Bowles.  Bowles retreats covering up as Torres hunts him down and hits him with three or four heavy straights.  As Torres closes the distance, Bowles changes his angle and throws a short right hook of his own that drops Torres onto his back.  Torres uses his legs create some distance in a sort of open guard, but Bowles passes his legs while standing up. Bowles begins to drops heavy right hands and then switches to his left and lands the knock out strikes to Torres' chin, ending the fight with a KO with 1 minute left in the first round.   Bowles now the Bantamweight Champ 8-0-0, Torres 36-2-0.

Though the fight is a short fight it is a good fight.  Two guys both hurt in the first round from strikes recovering and coming back to damage the other.  Unfortunately for Torres it was his turn and he gets caught.  As I said earlier in the review, this is a great weight class.  Unlike boxing where the lighter weights punch each other to death and may knock someone out in the late rounds, MMA uses 4-6oz gloves which leave no room for error and can make for a short fight fast.  Fun fight to watch.

The entire event was good, with the undercards to this fight all basically ending is good fashion.  Leonard Garcia was able to pull out a victory against Massouh, Garcia coming off of a devastating loss.  Tough fight for Garcia who hurt Massouh early, but Massouh was very game and had great ground skills to push Garcia all three rounds.

Catch the replay on Versus.

Well if you see it come across your TV take advantage of it, Comcast and DirectTV had a falling out on the "Versus" channel and DTV no longer carries the channel. So I no longer have Versus. It is great free MMA man, if you like mma you will enjoy.

Wassup Bro!! Great commentary on this fight. I just watched it night or two ago & i was thinking that Bowles had a solid chance to win this fight if he can stay inside & control the ring. What i wasnt thinking was that he would crack Torres open in the first round. It was an excellent fight. Definitely a showpiece for Bowles.
