"Aimless Love" is an excellent collection of poetry by the two term poet laureate of the United States. His name is Billy Collins. This book contains poems that Billy has published in other books. It also has new poems. The poem "Aimless Love" reminds me to find the beauty in every day things. I can find beauty in a bird, a bowl of broth and a lovely stranger. Many of his best poems are about the countries and places that he has visited. "Istanbul" is one of my favorite poems. Billy Collins writes about his experience of visiting a public bath house that is three hundred years old. He imagines what it would like to be washed and treated like a sultan by servants. Travelling to Turkey and getting this kind of treatment is something I would enjoy very much. "Dinning Alone" is a poem that I enjoy, because it is about an experience that I have every day. Billy reinforces my belief that a person can dine alone and not feel lonely. I can truly just enjoy the food that I am served. Billy writes about enjoying his meal of trout and asparagus in this poem. This poem makes me feel hungry. I love any poem about food. "Rome In June" is another poem that I love. Billy writes about the beautiful Spanish steps in Rome. I learned that the Spanish steps is the longest staircase in Europe with 135 steps. This lovely staircase is adorned with azaleas and other flowers. I love to see something this beautiful. "January In Paris" is another poem that I love. Billy Collins writes about the romance of pedaling through the streets of Paris. He writes about passing street cleaners, beggars and a bakery. I learned that Paris is the capital of public kissing. Paris would be the ideal place for me to fall in love. I also like this poem because Billy alludes to the poet by the name of Paul Valory. I have never heard of this writer before. I love to discover new poets by reading other poets. I like the poem "Genius". Billy uses the example of swans as an example of genius creatures. Swans have the ability to adapt to their environment. They can be brutal and yet serene and beautiful. These birds also mate for life. I think I have to adapt the traits of a swan after reading this poem. "I Love You" is an interesting poem. It is a phrase that Billy never heard growing. He is learning how to say it as an adult as I am. "The Revenant" is a poem about all of the things that a dog would not like about his owner. Billy proves with "The Revenant", that does not need to have a positive tone to be perceptive. I really like this poem for that reason.
Writing poetry has always helped me become a better writer, because it forces me to be observant of everything. It also makes me confront my feelings about people and both positive and negative experiences. I have been busy with work, so I haven't written any new poems in a long time. Billy Collins inspires me to continue writing poetry of my own. I am confident that I can find the beauty and poetry in my every day life. I absolutely love this book. I hope other readers enjoy this book too.
