Doc Ford thriller set in Florida
1 review about "Deep Shadow" by Randy Wayne White

Standard Doc Ford fare, with perhaps a bit too much literary tension . . !

  • May 19, 2010

Randy Wayne White has made a career out of his Doc Ford novels, solid thrillers featuring marine biologist Marion "Doc" Ford, who lives on Sanibel Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Deep Shadow is White's 17th Doc Ford novel, and he has developed a bit of a formula over the years - action, flashbacks, impossible situations, and 350 pages of story covering only a short period of time.

In this story, Ford and his friends are diving in a deep lake in central Florida, searching for a legendary plane wreck and its cargo of Cuban gold. There's a cave-in underwater, trapping Ford's friends Tomlinson and Will Chaser, and above the surface, two meandering killers in search of a fortune have stumbled onto the divers' little enterprise and they want the treasure as well.

White's stories are always filled with marvelous detail about Florida's wild places, and the carryover of Will Chaser from his previous novel (Dead Silence) was nice to see. The Doc Ford novels do stand alone as thrillers, but reading the series from the start is fun because each book leads to the next, and references to what came before are subtle, but fun if you are a fan.

This one did get a little tedious toward the end - the amount of time the trapped characters had left to breathe was shorter than the amount of time it took to read the scenes, but I kept reading, knowing the bad guys would get their due.
