Yeah, it's self-conscious, yeah, it takes itself seriously to the point of pretention, and yes, I arrived at it prepared to recognize another overhyped mesh of faux-messianic Nineties whine-rock--but when younger brother Liam Gallagher coughs, "I think I've got a feeling I've lost inside," he sounds sincere. And while "Cast No Shadow" fit with my expectations for the album, the rest broke free: they're shiny (embarrassingly Beatles-ish candypop "She's Electric"), they're sweet (bitterly so: rock with the hulking "Morning Glory"), they're catchy ("Roll with It"), and most of the time they're sincere. Just to throw in my few pennies about the Contest of the Singles, I'd trust a "Wonderwall" supporter over a "Champagne Supernova" fan most days of the week. And I'd trust anyone who recognizes the futile misdirection of the album as its greatest strength much more than I'd trust any of the thousands of airheaded "Q" subscribers who voted this charmingly-flawed delight the 2nd best album in British history.
