One of the Best "Toys" I Never Thought I Needed

I'll admit that I was never interested in any type of portable music device outside of the transister radio I used to carry with me to professional football games (in the days before video scoreboards and microphones for the refs) so I could understand what was happening on the field. This radio used to go with me for trips to the beach during the summer. Since those bygone days I had not had another type of portable device and never thought I would need one. I would generally l would generally laugh at people that had a Sony Walkman and would walk with those headphones down the street oblivious to what was going on around them.
About two years ago, I attended a conference and got a free MPE player. This held about 50 songs. To try it out I turned to my kids who both had extensive song libraries that they used for their ipods. I quickly filled this device with a small collection of some of my favorite songs. I then took it with me and found that I didn't want to take it off. Being a gym rat, I decided to take the MPE player with me and found that I started to work out with a lot more vigor. I was a happy camper but I wanted something with a little more oomph.
About this time my daughter was looking to upgrade her ipod nano to the ipod touch. As the nano held about 1000 songs (more than I would ever need) and was a lot more user friendly than the cheap device I had, it gave me an idea. I would buy my daughter that touch if she gave me her old device. She happily agreed and I don't know if I might have been the more happy person getting her "old" device.
I have since loaded that nano with about 350 songs and it goes to the gym with me several times a week. I have bought the accessories for attaching it to my arm with a long pair of ear buds. I swear at times I am lifting a lot more heavy weight because of the extra energy I get when I can listen to my special songs. I also found it a good thing to have on the New York Subway because of all the annoying yellers (usually crazed people spouting nonesensical statements about the Bible) and other distracting people that seem to always get in my car when I am heading home and just want to relax on my ride. I never knew before I got this device, what a pleasure it could be.
Many people have been asking me why I don't upgrade the device to one with video. I tell them I am fine using my nano for just listening to my favorite tunes and it still has way more free space than I ever need. I prefer distracting my eyes with a good book than watching a video on a tiny screen. Now maybe one day I might consider a Kindle but that is another story!

Do I REALLY need three iPods?

Of course not. But do I have them? Absolutely I do!
I had two iPods prior to the nano and in the spirit of the holidays decided to get one as a gift to spread some musical cheer. I debated the capacity of the classic vs. the portability and convenience of the nano and came to the conclusion that while it is awesome to be able to carry every song you'd ever heard in your life around with you, the smaller, and infinitely more portable nano was the way to go.
Turns out the intended recipient of my iPod love had the same idea. So come Christmas morning what do we find but similarly shaped objects under the tree, much to our amusement when the wrappings were finally torn off.
Well, they do say the best gifts to give others are ones you'd like to receive yourself...

- It weighs 1.3 ounces - feels like a toy that you can snap in half by accidently sitting on it (Remind me never to put mine in my back pocket)

On September 12, 2006, Apple updated the Nano line. The second-generation Nano features scratch-resistant, anodized aluminium casing like the earlier Mini's design; the multiple color choices (silver, green, pink, blue, and black) mirror that of the Mini as well. However, unlike the second-generation Mini, the button labels do not match the color of the Nano. Instead, they are gray, like the first-generation Mini, except for the black iPod which has a black click wheel. The second-generation Nano features "a brighter, more vibrant display", a battery life upgrade (from 14 to 24 hours), and doubled storage sizes with the new 2, 4, and 8 GB models (compared to the previous 1, 2, and 4 GB models). The second generation iPod nanos also support gapless playback of audio files, a new search option, and a 40 percent brighter screen. The 2 GB model was available in silver only. The 4 GB was initially available in green, blue, silver, or pink. The 8 GB model was initially only available in black but Product Red was later added. Apple claims that the second generation iPod nano's packaging is "32% lighter and uses 52% less volume than the first generation", thereby reducing environmental impact and shipping cost at the same time.
