Being a owner of 3 cats, keeping my house clean has always been a major problem..  They shed hair like crazy, and doing vacuum every week or two just doesn't cut it, especially we have a 2-year old boy that does who knows what on the floor all the time.  With the little iRobot vacuum cleaner, I can finally keep our floor nice and clean!

The iRobot came with the little robot vacuum, a docking/charging station, and a couple of virtual "walls" that you can setup to keep the Roomba from going to places you don't want it to.  The first time we let it clean the floor, it would stop every half an hour requesting us to clean it, since there are a lot of cat hair that were hidden under the sofa/bed that we never cleaned before, and they can get stuck in the roller easily, but once we used the vacuum a couple of times, our floor is clean enough and it will go around the house and clean for a couple of hours and went back to its docking station automatically to recharge!  Now I just have it do its cycle pretty much every day when we are not home or was downstairs having dinner, and our floor is now always clean!

There are a few downsides to this little widget, first of all, it takes a LONG time for it to vacuum the floor, this usually is not a problem since I just let it do its job where nobody's there, but if you spilled some dirt and just want to spot clean a place, you probably want to use an old fashioned vacuum cleaner, it's faster and more efficient.  And the Roomba can get stuck sometimes, I would either block off the troubled area, or just rearrange so that it doesn't get stuck anymore.  And it is pretty pricey at $300, you can a very good conventional vacuum cleaner at a lower price.  However, I find that the positives far outweighs the few problems I have with it, and I'd especially recommend it to fellow pet owners out there that want to keep their place as hair free as possible!

I was thinking of getting one of these to clean while we are out. Do you recommend this for both carpet and hardwood floors?

Yeah, we use the Roomba to clean both hardwood floors and carpet, it does a pretty good job for both.
