started from Manter flat trail head around 9 AM on Feb/21/2009, reached shi hut at 11:10 AM. overall carry-on weighed 50 lb (total 196 lb). departed from Ski Hut around noon, snowshoeing up with "duck steps" on leftside of Baldy bowl, summitted at 2:30 PM, retreated several hundred feet from summit to a relatively even place, which is on the top of Mt. Blady bowl (the "Big Slope").
Starting from 3:30 PM, I spent one and half hours to shovel a 60-cm deep snow pit for the tent and a smaller but deeper pit to trap cold air, to trim the walls of the snow pit, and to tromping the pit bottom to make it even.
Wow, this sounds like a great trip. Have you ever snow camped elsewhere? How does Mt Baldy compare to your other trips? I live just down the hill but have never hiked the peak during the winter.
