Lucienne 2006 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir - Lone Oak Vineyard

The 2006 Lone Oak Pinot Noir is the second release in our single vineyard program from Lucienne, a winery owned by Hahn Estates and located in the Santa Lucia Highlands. A small and prestigious vineyard, Lone Oak is located in the cooler northern part of the Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation.

Beginning with above average rainfall of about 15”, the growing season for the 2006 vintage maintained cool temperatures with few heat spikes. Adjustments for the spring rain left perfect conditions for Pinot Noir. The summer months brought early morning fog which burned off by 10am followed by drying winds and warm weather. Early and even bud break set the stage for even ripening with full bloom by the middle of May. In early September, the Indian summer hit, assuring ripe flavors and fully developed tannins allowing for an above average hang time in the SLH. Leaf removal and shoot thinning (about 10%) allowed for normal clusters with a lower yield than expected- about 3 tons per acre. The grapes were hand harvested between October 12th and 17th a full month later than usual.

The grapes were brought into the winery where the fruit was hand sorted, de-stemmed, lightly crushed, and cold soaked for 3 days. The juice was then loaded into 3 ton open top fermenters where EC1118 yeast was used at 90-95 degrees F for seven days, with punch down three times a day. Drained off straight into small stainless steel tanks, free run was allowed to settle for one week, at which time the wines were put down to barrel for natural malolactic fermentation, which finished in March. The wine was then pressed using a basket press, allowing for gentle pressing, causing less damage to the grape skins, fewer solids, and an increased ability for the winemaker to make determinations by taste.

The wine was coopered in 50% new French oak- DeMercurey, Radoux, Vernou and 50% in neutral French barrels, spent 12 months in barrel, and was blended and bottled in November 2007. The clones from each block were kept separate until bottling, allowing the winemaker to choose the best lots in order to make the finest wine possible.

The 2006 Lone Oak Pinot Noir shows aromas of wild cherry and juicy raspberry interlaced with pomegranate, mushroom, and hints of leather. The silkiness on the palate leads into a feminine, elegant finish.

Lucienne Vineyards takes its name from two sources, Nicky Hahn’s middle name—Lucien, but in the feminine form to honor the namesake of the mountain range where the vineyards are located, Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia was the patron saint of light—she was known for arriving with a crown of candles to bring light to the darkness during the yuletide and winter solstice. Her crown of candles graces our label.
THE VINEYARDS
Our vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands take advantage of some of the best growing conditions in California for ultra-premium Pinot Noir. The southeast facing slopes sit above the fog, allowing the vines to take full advantage of the sun. This long exposure to the sun, combined with the cool temperatures from Monterey Bay, gives the vineyards a longer growing season, increasing complexity in the fruit.

THE WINES
Winemaker Paul Clifton crafts the Lucienne wines utilizing his passion for Pinot Noir and cool climate viticulture. The two wines—a Santa Lucia Highlands appellation and Lone Oak single vineyard designation—are produced in small quantities with the first vintage coming from 2005. The wines are focused and elegant with a silky mouthfeel and pure velvety Pinot Noir flavors.

From my WineLog at WineLog.net:      garnet with light ruby edges      Nose: Wonderful ripe, unpicked dusty raspberry, some slight toast. The fruit gets brighter with air and nice dried garden herbs towards the end.      Palate: Great structure, really nicely balanced with violet florals, some toast and integrating oak. Finishes quite good with good acid and dusty tannin in the rather long finish.
