Full Bodied and Full of Color, This 2007 Malbec from Xumek Vineyards is a Favorite!
Jul 7, 2009
I recently hosted a wine tasting party with my Fiance at our apartment and while people brought over some amazing wines, most of our guests went back for more of this Malbec. I was first introduced to Malbec a few months ago when my friend Kate brought over a limited edition Simonassi 2007 bottle. Originally, this is what I was going to buy for our party until I found out that only 800 or so cases were shipped and it wasn't available anymore. I was pretty torn up until the wine expert at a state store in Philly recommended the Xumek Malbec and I decided to trust in her judgment. Let me just say that I was very pleased with it.
This Malbec is very full of color and has a very smooth finish. Some would say that it has hints of some plum flavor, but I don't think that is quite accurate. In fact, I have only had one wine in my life (I can't remember the name of it; it's a white) that I could actually get a hint of the fruity flavor wines supposedly have. It was a french white that was supposed to have hints of peach and grapefruit and while I didn't catch the peach, the grapefruit was very much a flavor. This Malbec gives a very nice, warm feeling in your mouth and is full-bodied. As far as a nice cheese pairing, I would go with a Manchego. I made this very nice Tapas style dish with Manchego cheese, granny smith apple slices, sliced baguette and honey and it paired very nicely with the wine.
Right now, Malbec is still fairly new coming into the wine scene as it is really native to South America; mainly Chili and Argentina. There have been attempts to transplant the grape to Europe, but from what i hear it doesn't come out the same way. I think this mostly has to do with climate. If you are looking for a nice red wine and looking to try something different, go with this Malbec. Currently, I can't find a link to it online, but your local liquor store or state store should have it. If I can find a link, I will make the update. A bottle of this 2007 Xumek Malbec runs for $14.49.
