Friendliest Farmers' Market In LA

I've been to dozens of farmers' markets over the years in multiple cities and states and I can honestly say that this little market is the friendliest and most unique to date. Why?

Atmosphere: The second I set foot in this market I noticed the positive energy. Everyone is smiling, dancing or singing and just genuinely having a good time. It was a rainy, dreary Sunday morning, but you could barely even notice. Good food, good people, good energy.

Entertainment: This is not by any means a quiet event. They have live bands playing every Sunday and even a pony ride for the kids. It's a really great place to take the family for some inexpensive entertainment and outdoor fun.

Food: I rarely eat a hot meal at a farmers' market because it is usually unhealthy (hot dogs, etc.) or just not very appetizing ... but this farmers' market has amazing food! Even in the rain, there were dozens of people standing in lines to get some hot breakfast. The variety was incredible ... about five or six different stands with everything from French crepes to omelets. There are even a couple of vegan stands that are very fairly priced.

Produce: I saw the most beautiful heirloom tomatoes and every fruit and veggie looked fresh, crisp and delicious. It is not an especially large farmers' market so they've definitely chosen the best vendors for each type of produce. There's a great selection of fuji apples, too!

Rare finds: The dried fruit stand has everything you could ever dream of. Best of all, they have a pretty good selection of dried fruit without preservatives or sulfur. I taste-tested a few (all delicious) before settling on the white peaches and I am loving them. They also have two really great bread stands ... it is impossible for me to walk by them without buying a loaf. I bought the cranberry walnut bread from "The Bread Man" bakery and it is just perfect for a quick pre-workout breakfast.

If you live in the LA area and haven't experienced this yet, I strongly suggest that you do! Check out the Wiki for more info and directions!

If you don't live in the LA area and haven't found your local farmers' market yet, I strongly suggest that you do. It's great for healthy shopping on a budget and greatly benefits local farmers and the environment. Even if you're a farmers' market newbie, you can search by zip code on localharvest.org to find one close to you!

Thanks for sharing! I live about 60 minutes from LA (on a good traffic day) but always love a reason to drive out there. I am always surprised how many people don't realize that goods at the Farmers' Market is cheaper...another plus!

I'd always wondered that, too, because I'd read about Main St and Arizona Ave and always wondered how they're related, because they're not in the same area. So this makes more sense now. Thanks for clearing that up!

It's funny because every time I heard people talking about the Santa Monica farmers' market I assumed it was the one you're talking about, but that incident was actually at the Arizona street location (near 3rd Street Promenade), not Main Street (which is closer to Venice). So if you haven't tried this one yet, you should definitely check it out!

You know, Davis has an excellent farmers' market every Wednesday and Saturday, and I used to go as often as I could. Farmers' markets are the best places to buy produce, hands down. However, with this one, I've always had negative energy because the incident where many people were killed here happened on my 18th birthday while I was out hiking in the wilderness. I didn't know it had taken place until the next day when I turned on the tv! So I guess I need to just get over it and pay them a visit once more. After all, it's been nearly half a decade! In any case, you're absolutely right about the dried fruit section!

A Rainy Sunday you say???? Hmmm... Not to mention that is my name, but a rainy sunday in Santa Monica? Now that's interesting. Haha. But yea, thanks for putting this up, I always love to shop good, whole, natural foods and the more places to meet my fancy, the better. Very well organized..and I'm going to keep an eye on your reviews from now on seeing as we probably like the same quality of foods, me being a pseudo vegan..
