You might already know that Trader Joe's has an incredible cheese selection. My husband and I picked up this Raw Milk Cheddar Cheese on a recent trip and became instant fans. It was almost identical to fresh cheddar cheese that we bought at a local farm in New Hampshire a few seasons ago. When it comes to cheese, I am hard to please, and even I think this cheese is incredible and at the top of its class.
Now, I know what you might think, raw milk? Well, it is a lot healthier and safer than you think - or what the huge dairy industry leads you to believe. The fact is, pasteurization kills most nutrients in milk. In reality, even organic whole milk is not whole milk. Fat is taken out of milk and then reintroduced into it by the process of homogenization, with this process even whole milk has a specific percentage of fat, which is still less than fresh cow's milk. It is true that it is fattening, but if it is consumed unpasteurized it still has nutrients that help digest. Pasteurized milk does not have the same digestive enzymes - hence you are drinking, as one man put it, 'dead white liquid'. No wonder so many people can't digest what we call 'milk', it doesn't even resemble real milk anymore. Unfortunately raw milk is greatly overpriced in my state, otherwise we would drink more of it instead of the organic whole milk we buy.
This cheese has a crumbly consistency that is very similar to the one I ate fresh from the farm. It is so rich and creamy and it is not something you would want to indulge in since it is very filling. I don't eat much cheese, but I like to just have a little piece with breakfast, sometimes on toast. The taste, well - how can I describe it, it is cheddary. :P You would have to taste it yourself to find out! The price is very reasonable for what you get at$4.99 a pound. The average deli cheese that is of the same price range can't even compare to the taste and freshness of Trader Joe's Raw Milk Cheddar Cheese.
