Sunflower Seeds Shelled & On the Raw!

Granted I've never been a fan of nuts, sunflower seeds and the like, since I'm not a fan of hard foods, I felt compelled to purchase these raw sunflower seeds at Trader Joe's when I was going through a health kick a while back and was trying to eat as raw as possible. These particular ones from TJ's are shelled, too, so it's just the sunflower seed kernal. They're small, not too hard to chew through, and most importantly, nutritious, so I thought I'd give 'em a whirl.

At 16g of fat per 1/4 cup serving size, these sunflower seeds contain more fat than I expected them to, but I guess that's how you make sunflower seed butter, right? At least it's mostly good fats! Its also got 8g of protein, takes care of 10% of the daily recommended iron intake and they're high in antioxidents.

I'm not such a huge big fan of eating these straight because honestly, they taste kind of like cardboard when consumed that way, but I have found other ways to sneak a little protein and antioxidents into my meals. My favorite uses for these raw sunflower seeds are:

As a salad topping. Much healthier than croutons!
On top of bagels with cream cheese as glue
Blended into smoothies. Might sound a little strange, but try it. It adds a little crunch to your drink!

Other ways that I'm thinking about consuming raw sunflower seeds:

Roasting them
When I finally get around to baking my own bread (check out this recipe), I think chopped up sunflower seeds would go lovely baked in and/or on top.
I'm also going to try chopping up the kernals and putting them in a variety of different dishes.

If you've got any suggestions for how to consume raw sunflower seeds, I'd love to hear them!

Now I'm going to go back to nom nom noming on my Caesar salad topped full of these :D

sunflower seeds are definitely good, but like you I'm not a big fan of snacks like this. Thanks for the tip on how to use this stuff. Does it really work well with bread?

Yup, I dig 'em baked into bread. Especially sourdough! I think it's Acme Bakery that makes the sourdough rolls with the sunflower seeds, flax seeds, poppy seeds and some others... Definitely yum :)

Haha, found something we are different in! I LOVE hard foods and nuts. Cashew, Macadamia, Hazelnut, Chestnut and even Walnut! Sunflower seeds are actually great as snacks while traveling (as far as I'm concerned) as they are not as heavy as the others. And the fact I like crunchy stuff might have to do with it as well. I think it's ok although not as great as the other nuts. You might like it over yogurts. I had tried it as toppings on yami yogurts and they are really not bad at all! Do you have yami yogurt where you are located? I love Yami Yogurt but they are a little on the expensive side!

Whoa, this is a shocker! :P Yami Yogurt is like Pinkberry, right? I don't have any located around me, but I have plenty of other tart frozen yogurt franchises! I'll have to try sunflower seeds on top of it, though I prefer mochi balls ;D
