A great, hidden treat!

Vie de France is the closest you can get to a French-style bakery chain anywhere in the US. Yes, there are better, more authentic bakeries, cafes, and restaurants, but Vie de France is a small chain and whenever you grow a bit, you have to give up some authenticity, it seems (look at Taco Bell and Olive Garden on that matter).

I used to frequent Vie de France when we lived on the East Coast near Washington, DC. They have really good bakery items like breads, pastries, and croissants. But if you're in the mood for actual food, they've got you covered. My favorite here is their French onion soup. It's small but filling and will warm you up like nothing else can on a cold, East Coast winter day.

Since we moved to California back when I was young, I've only been to Vie de France a handful of times as they have a location in South Coast Plaza in Orange County. It's the same foods, but it's a 40 minute drive to get there. If you're near the mall, check it out, but if not, don't stress. There's probably a smaller, more authentic French bakery near you.
