Perfectly Baked Yams

Based on nothing but personal preference, my family has always eaten yams over sweet potatoes during the holidays. Yams are generally a little sweeter, and denser then Sweet Potatoes, though I know many people could care less or notice the difference. For some reason the grocery stores in my area stocked Yams. Traditionally we serve them baked with nothing but a sprinkle of brown sugar and a pat of butter. My family has experimented with other methods of cooking yams, and they have all been delicious, though I still prefer to bake them. Here are two different ways you can serve yams for your dinner.

Yams with Orange Zest and Brown Sugar

Ingredients

4-6 yams, one for each dinner guest.

Butter or margarine

Brown sugar

Orange zest and splash of orange juice

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Wash the yams and poke holes in skin with fork.

Baked for 30 minutes until skin becomes wrinkled and potato is tender.

Slice in half lengthwise; spread a layer of butter, and the sprinkle with brown sugar. If desired, sprinkle with orange zest and splash orange juice on top. Return to oven and bake for 20 more minutes.

Baked Yams with Marshmallow

Ingredients

4-6 yams, one for each dinner guest.

Butter or margarine

5 large marshmallows, these are best, and vegan! or 10-15 mini marshmallows per yam

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Wash the yams and poke holes in skin with fork.

Baked for 50 minutes until skin becomes wrinkled and potato is tender.

Slice in the center of yam, and push ends together to create opening; spread a layer of butter, and stuff in marshmallows. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until marshmallows start to brown and bubble.

Baked Yams with Maple Butter

Ingredients

4-6 yams, one for each dinner guest.

1 sticks Butter or 1 cup margarine

¼ cup maple syrup

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

½ teaspoon cinnamon/nutmeg/allspice

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Wash the yams and poke holes in skin with fork.

Baked for 50 minutes until skin becomes wrinkled and potato is tender.

While yams are cooking, combine the rest of ingredients into a whipped butter.

Slice open yams and serve with a big dollop of the maple butter.

I'm with devora, put one in the microwave for 10 minutes and you're good to go. Butter and brown sugar is a must. Thanks for the review.

Ooooh, this review is making me hungry! I think I'm going to microwave a yam for dinner tonight... but I'll be saving these recipes for nice dinner get-togethers! Thanks! :)

The baked marshmallows on top have always been my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I was often guilty of the "shallow" scoop where I'd skim a top layer of marshmallows off without getting much of the yams.

Hahhh...I definitely have done that before too.
