Our gift to ourselves!

Looking for an extra special place to experience the great outdoors?   Consider one of the 548 National Wildlife Refuges which can be found in all 50 states.  The overwhelming majority of them are open to the public.  We visit a refuge in our home state frequently and whenever my wife and I travel we always look for a National Wildlife Refuge

Over the years we have found that each National Wildlife Refuge we visit offers a completely unique experience.  They are such peaceful places and a most welcome change from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Breathe in the clean fresh air and marvel at the countless species of birds as they dip and bob all around you!   Depending where you are you might encounter a rare variety of water fowl or perhaps discover harbor seals sunning themselves on the rocks along the shore.  If you are visiting Florida's Panther National Wildlife Refuge you will most likely find some colorful wild orchids to gaze at while those exploring Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in upstate New York just might spot a bald eagle.  The possibilities seem to be endless.  National Wildlife Refuges can be found in all manner of terrain including mountain meadows, dense forestsfreshwater marshes, fertile grasslands, alpine summits, picturesque coastline and sun-baked deserts.  Whether you are interested in birding, wildlifeplant life or just taking a leisurely hike a National WIldlife Refuge is a great place to be.  We never fail to enjoy ourselves!

National Wildlife Refuges are dedicated to the conservation of fish and wildlife and their habitats.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlfe Service does an amazing job managing these places with very limited resources.  If you are someone who rarely takes the time to "stop and smell the roses" I urge you to visit a National Wildlife Refuge in your area. It's a great change of pace. Very highly recommended!
