I think they are still relevant and do a good job of incorporating the digital age into their services by offering free computer use to those that don't have a computer at home. I also think that libraries provide a safe place for people to educate themselves and escape from their daily routine, it's a great treat to be able to borrow books instead of having to buy them. That's my version of belt tightening! I do see the debate for saying it's a waste of taxpayer money; however, in an age when we are closing schools and not giving our children safe places to hang out at after school, don't you think it's worth it to invest in libraries? If it's a choice between a school and a library, I pick a school. If it's a choice between a raise or a new house for the governor and a library, I pick a library. So, I guess my answer is contingent on the choice I'd have to make to create a budget.
