In this digital era do you think that public libraries are still relevant and necessary or do you believe that in this era of belt-tightening and budget cutting they are a luxury we can no longer afford and a waste of tazpayer money?

I think they are still relevant and do a good job of incorporating the digital age into their services by offering free computer use to those that don't have a computer at home. I also think that libraries provide a safe place for people to educate themselves and escape from their daily routine, it's a great treat to be able to borrow books instead of having to buy them. That's my version of belt tightening! I do see the debate for saying it's a waste of taxpayer money; however, in an age when we are closing schools and not giving our children safe places to hang out at after school, don't you think it's worth it to invest in libraries? If it's a choice between a school and a library, I pick a school. If it's a choice between a raise or a new house for the governor and a library, I pick a library. So, I guess my answer is contingent on the choice I'd have to make to create a budget.

Whether or not they should be supported via taxes is an interesting question. Perhaps not. Our local library is privately owned. The town makes a contribution, but it's a voluntary one. Users are asked to contribute a nominal amount, something like $20 per family, each year. It's not open as many hours as many town-run libraries, but it serves its purpose and continually updates its collections.
