Traveling on a budget, here's a decent clean place to stay
Mar 11, 2009
Recently I travled back to Charleston, SC. My plans were uncertine, but I knew I would be in town for a few days. I was on a strict budget, but wanted some place clean, quite and safe to stay. Last year I had stayed at this same location with 4 friends while we were travling to an event in PA. We we were riding our motorcycles and had one driving a Ryder rental van as a support vehical along the way. We did an overnight stop in Charleston and were looking for a safe area to stay as the bikes would be parked outside and the rental Van had the company logo plastered across the side. It was obvious we were out of towners. I had a good experience with this hotel in the past so I figured I would give them my business again.
This specific location is in the North Charleston, SC area on Northwoods Blvd. This is the major retail area of N. Charleston. In fact the Hotel is situated with in the perimeter of the Northwoods shopping mall. It's right off the I-26 freeway which is the main vaine in and out of the Charleston metro area. Your neighbors are Denny's resturante, Wendy's and an Amaco gas station are all with in a short walk. The Mall is your typical large Shopping mall with all your chain shops. The surrounding area has very good chain resturantes and fast food. There is a Walmart 2 blocks down the road where Ashley Phosphate Rd. crosses Rivers Ave. There's also a Lowes and Home Depote directly behind the Red Roof Inn. Historical Downtown Charleston is 15 min down I-26. The airport is a 5 min drive down I-26 as is the I-525 interchange.
I arrived on Monday evening and reserved a smoking room with 2 twin beds. The rate was $49.99. With taxes and fees it came out to $55 a night. I ended up stayin a week. On Friday the rate increased to $55 a night and with taxes came to $61. The room itself was clean. No visable funky stains or damage. It was roomy enough for me and the person I was traveling with. The bathroom was a little small with only a toilet and full size shower. The sink is located in a vanity outside the bathroom. Decent size TV with basic cable and HBO. There was also a small desk and office style chair so I could use my Laptop with out having to sit on my bed. House keeping came by around noon everyday with fresh towles and sheets. The only down side was you had to pay extra for wireless access. They are a T-mobile Hotspot. It cost $4 for 24hours of access or $20 for 7 days. Overall I had a comfortable stay. It's a budget hotel but a step above your typical Motel 6. This particular location has a lot of contract workers staying there as there is a lot of urban development projects going on around the city currently. Nothing to worry about, but there is a lot of early morrning traffic as these guests leave for work very early. If you're a light sleeper you may be woken by the sound of large desile work trucks starting up around 6am.
I'd recomend this particular hotel if you are traveling on a budget or are just thrifty and don't require many emenities durring your stay. It 's convient to major roads and interstates aswell as dinning and major chain shopping. Pretty much anything you could need is right around the corner.
